Too Body Concious?

Dear Readers,
I was flipping through Cleo Magazine for the month of June 2010 when I came across an article that I find really interesting. The title is 'Too Much Body Love?' by Nicole Elphick.

Okay, so we all know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder because it's very subjective. What is beautiful to some may not be attractive to others and vice versa. The beauty industry hasn't been very fair to us mere mortals either, brainwashing us into thinking that tall and skinny is the way to go, fair skin is to be coveted and only long, black straight hair is healthy and beautiful.

Recently there have been a lot of campaigns promoting 'Body Love' or accepting how we look and that everyone is beautiful in their own special way no matter what size or color we are..

Body Love.. Everyone is beautiful..

Any size can be sexy and attractive..

Nicole, the writer of the article on the other hand is asking the question "Why is it so da*n important for us to be attractive?" Long ago women are viewed as nothing more than decorative things that should be seen and not heard. Their value was based on their looks and their looks alone. Now it seems in these modern times where women can work as hard and achieve as much as a man, have rights to vote, etc but we still have to look nice on top of all that.

Although 'Body Love' campaigns may be good but the emphasis it puts on our looks makes us women judge and compare how we look like to other women when we can use that time to plan our career, use our energy to achieve greater things and so on.

Most of these campaigns are also proclaiming that 'real women have curves' and that 'men prefer a curvaceous woman'. By doing so, we are indirectly belittling the femininity of naturally thin women. Telling naturally thin women to be curvaceous because men love it is just the same as telling naturally curvy women to be thin because designers make their clothes in ridiculously small sizes.

 Thin.. Less feminine?

 Curvy.. A real woman?

"Letting other people's perceived judgements of your body form the basis of your own self-esteem, and believing that your attractiveness is important to your own self-worth, is like taking your hapiness and putting it in someone else's hands. Perhaps instead of viewing our bodies on a superficial level as something that needs to be accepted, we should start appreciating everything it does."

Big or small, they both can stand, pose, smile... And win in a beauty pageant.. :)

Our bodies is just one tiny element out of the thousands that make us who we are. When we stop focusing so much on it, that's when we truly accept all aspects of ourselves. Women should celebrate what their bodies can do like run, give birth to new people, grow, build houses. Women should also be celebrated for all their othes qualities such as their intelligence, empathy, endurance, determination and so on..
In a nutshell, Nicole is saying that being beautiful is not a goal a woman should strive to achieve more than being talented or smart. It isn't something that is to be emphasized in our life and shouldn't dictate how we feel about ourselves.

In my personal opinion, Nicole's point of view does have merit.. Unfortunately it's almost next to impossible to practice in the real world.. We will always, ALWAYS be judged based on the way we look whether it is to get a job, to get a partner, etc. Our physical being is after all what people first see and conveys what type of person we are before we get to even open our mouths and spout intelligent facts and figures or present our ideas.

We will also forever judge ourselves, however slightly, on how we look... When we look good in a particular outfit, we feel like everything is right in the world. Try watching makeover shows and you will see those who were 'made-over' smile more, laugh more and walk with their shoulder's back. Being beautiful is a confidence boost to women. It's just how we operate..

Before..

After... Notice how she carries herself differently?

Would you offer a corporate job to someone like this..

or like this? (In case you haven't caught on, it's the same person)

If you've read the article and have something to say about it, whether you agree or disagree with Nicole the writer, feel free to comment below. Those who haven't read the article are welcome to air their view too. Cheers!

Of course, personally I'm all for curves...

'Cause I have them... ;)

P/S: I'd like to see how Nicole Elphick look like.
P/P/S: The italicized part is where I quoted from her article. I also paraphrased her article for the most part of this post.

My First Birthday Celebration.. 26/06/2010

Dear Readers...
Last Saturday I had my first birthday party ever! I was sooo excited.. As my birthday fell on a weekend, my best friend who organized it decided to postpone the celebrations to the weekend. It wasn't a big gathering but it meant a lot to me because it's my first time having my birthday celebrated and with the people that I have become close to and view as my extended family.

We ate, drank and were merry.. On top of that we sang karaoke with some of us being unable to let the microphone go.. Hahaha.. Sepa tu ah? :) All of us had a wonderful time. The food were simple finger foods like chicken wings and such but it was the company that made the party lively..

I'd like to say thank you to all that came to the party, especially Ralphy and kak Eva for coming all the way from Telipok. Also to abang Boyd and kak Oak who graciously hosted the party at their home. Last but not least, thank you to my heart, my bestfriend, my love Harold for organizing everything. Cheers!

P/S: Sorry for the lack of pictures. Just protecting their privacy.. I'm sure you guys understand.. :)

P/P/S: Gee, there's a whole lot of firsts in my blog recently rite? ;)

First Experience: Being Totally Alone On My Birthday..

Dear Readers,
First of all thank you for all your birthday wishes and prayers. It really means a lot to me.

So it was the 23rd of June 2010 yesterday, my 24th birthday..  My friends were wishing me well and said that they hope I have a blast on that significant day..

If only.. Instead this is the year that I spent my birthday totally alone in a house that is way too big for me. Uwaa... Don't get me wrong, I'm no novice when it comes to not spending my birthday with my family. It's been 8 years since I've started going to boarding school and stuff afterall but at least even when I'm not with my family I have my friends to spend the day with..

This time it's totally zilch, zero, nadaa...

Walaweh, nasib ndada lagu sedih2 berkumandang time tu taw.. Kalo nda nangis juga kali.. Duigia.. Felt very miserable and was wallowing in self-pity... After a while I kinda felt bored drowning in that so I decided to snap out of it and celebrate with my one and only friend available at that time... Me.

So I cooked myself a very delicious and nutricious meal (Maggi Kari) and drank tea that beats Yoyo milky tea hands down (Lipton HK Milky Tea) and after my birthday feast I went on to do fun things with Me.

I brought out my arsenal of magazines (Seventeen, Cleo, Female, etc) for inspiration and took out all my clothes from my luggage (I've been living like a nomad for the past 1 year) and tried it on. Yup, I became a like a little girl playing dress up. Isn't it ironic?

Anyway..

I discovered that I had quite a few clothes that I have not worn yet and managed to match them to create 2 looks.. Yay to me! Hehehe... Susah juga rupanya mau mix and match ni but the payoff is worth it.. Should have done this a long time ago. I mean just spend and hour or two organizing my clothes and trying different things and stuff. I'm sure there are a lot of you out there who do that regularly but I don't. Usually I just put on a default outfit.. Ruginya Beta selama ini.. Huhu.. It's going to be my new hobby from now on..

To top it off I took time to look into my truckload of make-up and tried something out of the ordinary. Normally if I use color on my lids (just so you know I love purples, blues and greens) I use different shades from the same 'family'. Eg: Light purple on the inner corner of my eyes, medium purple on my lids and dark purple + black on the outer corners. It's simple, quick and frankly, a no-brainer.

This time I looked around for someting to inspire me and chose my baju kurung that has yellow, blue and pink flowers all over it.. Nah, amik ko sana.. I really had fun trying to find ways to incorporate all the colors onto my face. I think everyone who's into makeup should do this 'exercise'. Find something that inspires you and incorporate that into your makeup. I find that it helps to promote creativity so we don't get stuck in a rut with one look for years and years..

Eventually you know what dear readers? I found that my experience being 'home alone' on my birthday wasn't that bad after all. It would have been if I didn't shook myself up and did something instead of just being sad. Sure, I would have preferred to be surrounded by the people I love and those who love me too. But hey, things don't always go our way rite? So next time if you're stuck at home doing nothing, find something fun to do. It can make a whole lot of difference to your day.. Cheers!

P/S: I was being sarcastic about the Lipton's Milky Tea being better than Yoyo's just like I was being sarcastic about Maggi being nutritious. Just so you guys know lah.. Nanti salah paham pula.. Haha.. ;)

I'm Getting Older..

Dear Readers..
If you're one of my Facebook friends, I'm sure you'd know that I only have less than 12 hours before I turn one year older. For my previous birthdays it has never really bothered me that I am getting older. However this year sy langsung ndamau mengaku 24 tahun ni.. Even until today I'd rather admit that I'm 23 years and 364 days old.. Hahaha.. Don't know lah why.. Ada apa denganmu wahai angka 24? I don't like you oh.. Mungkin sebab angka genap ni.. Me no likey lah..

Oh well...

Sooooo... In order to cheer myself up I have decided to put together a wish list (dengan tidak malunya.. hahaha...) for my birthday.. Ala, nda semestinya kamu musti mau bili untuk sia pun... At least you'd know what I like kan.. BUT if ada yang bili untuk sy, sy tambah sayang dan doakan agar orang tu panjang umur dan murah 'rejeki' sepanjang hayat lah.. Hahahaha... Here it comes:

The Body Shop Summer Makeup Collection
These are the Baked-To-Last Eyeshadows..
L-R: Jade, Copper, Moonstone

I would choose Moonstone and Jade.. How about you? :)

This is a bronzer also from the same collection.. I think it would look simply GORGEOUS as a blusher..

MAC's Prep + Prime

OMG! This is my ultimate wish. It makes the skin really soft and glowing.. If I could have only one thing this would be it.. Thank God 1 Borneo has MAC... (hint le tue.. wakakaka...).

MAC's Select Sheer/Loose powder

This powder is really fine and leaves a wonderful finish.. Love it! It's especially good for those who have oily skin like yours trully.. (ala, bucur rahsia.. hehehe)

Last but not least, the L'oreal Open Eyes eyeshadow pallete in Cobalt.. Or is it Stellar? I'm not sure but it's a really gourgeous, GORGEOUS dark blue.. It reminds me of a glitteringly starry night.. I have been wanting it for the longest time. I've hunted in all over in KL for this pallette but it's always (and I mean ALWAYS) out of stock. In KK it's the same story. I can't even find a pic of it on the internet.. Now how ellusive is that? Sheesh..

So there it is, my wish list for turning 24 years old.. I had fun putting it together. Why don't you make your own wishlist too? It would definitely help those who matter in buying you the ultimate gift.. Hehehe.. Cheers!

Grumpy Bie..

Dear Readers..
Today I started my day feeling fairly okay but as the day went on I became more and more grumpy and irritable.. Goodness knows why.. Being hungry at mid-morning didn't help either..

At almost noon a man suddenly barged into my office and bossed me around..

Man: Mana si *Yurni?
Me  : Dia keluar. Ada apa tu?
Man: Sa mau bayar saman ni.. Aiya macam mana la ni, takkan mau tunggu dia datang balik.. (jeling2 sy lagi tu)
Me  : Em, sy pun boleh tolong uruskan pembayaran saman encik.
Man: Ya kah? Bah, capat!
Me  : (dalam hati) Silaka.. Silaka.. Silaka....

After I checked the amount of his fine..

Me  :RM60 encik.
Man: Hah, RM60? Betul kah nda oh? Rm30 bah tu..
Me  :(fedup sudah) Dalam system RM60..
Man: Bah nanti lah sy bayar..

He walked out the door..

Walaweh... After that my mood became as black as thunder.. Suma orang pun sy marah.. Polis pun sy marah, siap terhalau lagi tu dari opis sy.. Opss.. Sorry Corporal.. Nda sengaja.. Sy ingat ko urang besa yang bagaya mau menyuruh2 sa lagi.. Needles to say I met him again after I chased him out and all I can do was tersipu2 di pintu. Didn't say sorry though.. Yeah, I'm egotistical that way.. My popularity which is almost non-existent definitely went zilch I'm sure..

Just feeling bad about lashing at people.. Oh well...

*Names have been changed to protect the identities of the people involved..

So True..

I Hate You Then I Love You - Celine Dion and Pavarotti

I'd like to run away from you
But if I were to leave you I would die
I'd like to break the chains you put around me
And yet I'll never try

No matter what you do you drive me crazy
I'd rather be alone
But then I know my life would be so empty
As soon as you were gone

Impossible to live with you
But I could never live without you
For whatever you do / For whatever you do
I never, never, never
Want to be in love with anyone but you

You make me sad
You make me strong
You make me mad
You make me long for you / You make me long for you

You make me live
You make me die
You make me laugh
You make me cry for you / You make me cry for you

I hate you
Then I love you
Then I love you
Then I hate you
Then I love you more
For whatever you do
I never, never, never
Want to be in love with anyone but you

You treat me wrong
You treat me right
You let me be
You make me fight with you / I could never live without you

You make me high
You bring me down
You set me free
You hold me bound to you

I hate you
Then I love you
Then I love you
Then I hate you
Then I love you more / I love you more
For whatever you do / For whatever you do
I never, never, never
Want to be in love with anyone but you

I never, never, never
I never, never, never
I never, never, never
Want to be in love with anyone but you
But you

Beyonce Said It Best...

If I were a boy even just for a day
I'd roll out of bed in the morning
And throw on what I wanted
And go drink beer with the guys

And chase after girls
I'd kick it with who I wanted
And I'd never get confronted for it
'Cause they stick up for me

If I were a boy
I think I could understand
How it feels to love a girl
I swear I'd be a better man

I'd listen to her
'Cause I know how it hurts
When you lose the one you wanted
'Cause he's taking you for granted
And everything you had got destroyed

If I were a boy
I'd turn off my phone
Tell everyone it's broken
So they'd think that I was sleeping alone

I'd put myself first
And make the rules as I go
'Cause I know that she'd be faithful
Waiting for me to come home, to come home

If I were a boy
I think I could understand
How it feels to love a girl
I swear I'd be a better man

I'd listen to her
'Cause I know how it hurts
When you lose the one you wanted
'Cause he's taking you for granted
And everything you had got destroyed

It's a little too late for you to come back
Say it's just a mistake
Think I'd forgive you like that
If you thought I would wait for you
You thought wrong

But you're just a boy
You don't understand
And you don't understand, oh
How it feels to love a girl
Someday you wish you were a better man

You don't listen to her
You don't care how it hurts
Until you lose the one you wanted
'Cause you'vee taken her for granted
And everything you had got destroyed
But you're just a boy

My First Ever Ferry Trip - 12/06/2010

Dear Readers,
Last Saturday I went to Labuan for the first time via ferry.. Dalam 23 tahun, 11 bulan, 2 minggu hidup sy (Ketaralah ndamau mengaku 24 tahun kan.. Hehehe...), sy tidak pernah naik ferry ni.. Lucu oh kan?

Anyway, the reason for me and my friend going to Labuan was because my friend's sister wanted my friend to help her get her car to KK because she'll be using it to go to Sandakan this weekend. So off we went to the jetty at Jesselton's Point (Eh, itu kah tu ah? Lupa oh..) at around 9am..

It turns out that there were only 2 departure time for ferries going to Labuan in the daytime which was 8.30am and 1.30pm.. Obviously we missed the first one so we had to become ikan masin until 1300HRS.

Where we waited.. and waited.. and waited...

I love this.. So cute.. Felt as if I was in London..

After boarding the ferry, we set off for what was supposed to be a 3 hour journey to Labuan.. I said supposed to be because we ended up arriving in Labuan at 5.30pm. That's like 4 hours! Cramp ni.. Tapi for me it's okay lah.. Pengalaman kan...

The gorgeous sunset..

After we arrived, we went to eat chicken wings and drank coconut from its shell at the beachside with my friend's sister and niece. Best...

Happy times..

Unfortunately our return ticket to Menumbok was at 7pm that same day so we hurriedly bought the things we wanted (I bought chocolates, of course.. Hehehe... By the way, kedai2 di Labuan awal tutup oh kan..) and rushed to the Labuan jetty. This time we went on the big ferry because we were bringing the car with us..

I love how the sea ripples in the light of sunset..
The view was gorgeous and I loved the fact that I was able to experience travelling with both types of ferries. I took us only an hour to get to Menumbok and about 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours to get to Kepayan where my friend dropped me off. Tu nda termasuk singgah pi makan lagi di Papar..

In the end I arrived home at 11pm.. It was very tiring but I enjoyed the trip very much despite all the setbacks and difficulties we faced. Thank you to my friend for making the trip possible.. Cheers..

The Echoes In My Heart Some Time Ago..

I Don't Believe You - Pink

I don't mind it
I don't mind at all
It's like you're the swing set
And I'm the kid that falls
It's like the way we fight
The times I've cried
We come to blows
And every night
The passion's there
So it's got to be right
Right?

No I don't believe you
When you say don't come around here no more
I won't remind you
You said we wouldn't be apart
No I don't believe you
When you say you don't need me anymore
So don't pretend to
Not love me at all

I don't mind it
I still don't mind at all
It's like one of those bad dreams
When you can't wake up
It looks like you've given up
You've had enough
But I want more
No I won't stop
Because I just know
You'll come around
Right?

No I don't believe you
When you say don't come around here no more
I won't remind you
You said we wouldn't be apart
No I don't believe you
When you say you don't need me anymore
So don't pretend to
Not love me at all

Just don't stand there and watch me fall
Because I, because I still don't mind at all

It's like the way we fight
The times I've cried
We come to blows
And every night
The passion's there
So it's got to be right,
Right?

No I don't believe you
When you say don't come around here no more
I won't remind you
You said we wouldn't be apart
No I don't believe you
When you say you don't need me anymore
So don't pretend to
Not love me at all

I don't believe you

What Happened To The Power of Choice?

Dear Readers..
I'm feeling very pissed off at the moment. I'm not sure if I should vent right now because we always tend to say things that we regret when we are angry.. Oh well...

I remember when I was still studying there were so many things that I was forced to do even though I didn't want to. I wished that I was working so that I would finally be free of all the compulsory activities in school.

Then I started working.. Turns out, no such luck... Compulsory activities still plague me incessantly. What pisses me of is that some of those things aren't supposed to be compulsary.

Lets say joining a club or group in one's ministry. If I don't play sports, why do I have to join the sports club right? Those who are sporty are the ones who should join IF they want to.. Who knows, some of them want to retire from the sport scene right? It's a matter of PERSONAL choice..

The problem is, someone higher up on the ladder blackmails the newbies in a roundabout way to join. So I end up having to pay RM4 a month for a membership to a club I have absolutely NO INTEREST in. Hey, thats almost RM50 a year okay.. Money don't grow on trees. They use my money to fund their activities that I will never join anyway.. Smart...

Today was the issue of a trip. The club organized a visit to one of the districts in the interior this weekend. It was for ladies only and I've only heard about the trip this week. It wasn't compulsory at first but when there wasn't a lot of 'response' there is a possibility that it would be compulsory to go.. That was what made me pissed as I have plans for this weekend. Don't they know we have a life outside the workplace? Sure, I know the club represents that all of us are a family. Thats all sweet, cosy and nice in theory but COME ON people! Even in real family reunions not everyone can turn up right? We make an effort to but if we can't then we can't.

Imagine people who have something planned with their families weeks in advance then suddenly have to go to this trip just because not a lot of people wanted to go and so it becomes compulsory. Unfair right?

Those who planned this trip should have asked the members of the club first if they agree to it, ask them to take a vote and if the majority agrees to it take down the voters' names. Those people are the ones that must go to the trip cause they were the ones who agreed to it.

Sigh... Hope that trip won't be compulsory la.. I was so looking forward to this weekend as I'll be making my own trip to somewhere I've been wanting to go for years but never got the chance. Huhuhu...

By the way, I'm still pissed.. To those who are working, does this happen in your workplace too?

Passport to Great Weekends: Mamutik Island

Dear Readers..
When I was in KL, I had regretted the fact that I didn't explore Sabah to the fullest. Since I've come back 3 weeks ago, I decided that I was going to do just that. I want to explore every island in Sabah and every district as well. My adventure started yesterday when I went to Mamutik Island with a friend of mine, Erra.

We Jetted off from Beach Bum (the jetty at Shangri-La's Tg Aru Resort) at 8am with the return fee of  RM45 for the Island Bus.

Where we rented the snorkeling equipment and life jacket. RM10 each..

When we arrived we immediately had breakfast. There is a place to eat there and the price is affordable.. I ate eggs and baked beans while Erra had pancakes with honey and baked beans.. Very Western, no? Hehehe...

Erra

Moi

After that we took pictures like there was no tommorow and snorkelled.. I didn't see too many fish as I didn't venture to the deep end. There was a panic-inducing moment where I spotted a jellyfish! It must have been right behind me and it was a good thing that I turned around to float back to the shore then. I've never clambered back to shore that fast! The area where we snorkelled had a lot of rocks and I banged my legs againt them in my hurry but I didn't care! I felt a painful tingling on my legs (Lain lagi sakit langgar batu) but thank goodness I was not stung. Maybe that's just from the 'aura' of the jellyfish.. Yikes, baru lalu dekat dia sudah rasa pedih.. Bahaya..

Eventually I did get into the water again but I was so jumpy that I decided to just laze in the shade and read my book.. That made me feel very 'tourist'y (If that's even a word).. Hehe..

Shady..

The stretch of the beach..

Paradise...

After we had our fill of reading (or in Erra's case, snoozing) we sat in the shallow part of the water and talked.. and talked.. and talked... and ended up collecting seashells to make accessories... Hehehe... After a while we began to feel the waves hit us stronger and in rapid succession. Looking at the sky, turns out the clouds were getting heavy and dark.. We hit the showers and headed back to the Beach Bum Jetty by the 2.30pm Island Bus.. By that time it started to rain and the waves were big.. Quite a scary experience but no regrets... Hehehe...

Gelap oh...

Big Waves...

All in all, I had a blast and I wanna do it again! I haven't been to other islands aside from Mamutik but so far I like it because its not too commercial so there's less people, thus, more privacy.. Planning to explore other islands soon...
